Ever since I was a kid I thought that broadway needed a sidewalk at least down to Narcissus. Its scary walking down that narrow windy stretch. This is not a mountain road, its a highly pedistrian-traveled road in a densly populated neighborhood.
Today living off Hallock as a motorist I am always frightened when I encounter a bycylist or a pedestrian. Passing them is risky on such a narrow windy road, In again a densely populated area.
When I heard talk of a sidewalk in those areas, I was relieved and looking forward to getting out and walking those areas again.
I've also however heard about many people being upset because they didn't want the area to start looking like nassau county.
There are plenty of lovely areas around the country with sidewalks on main roads that don't look like nassau county. The new sidewalk in front of JAE hardly looks like nassau. I dont see how a sidewalk going up, down and around hills in those areas could look bad in anyway. Its really about safety here too. That's first. The area has grown a lot in the last 20 years and there are tons more pedestrians on those roads. I mean this has to happen eventually.
A sidewalk across king was also proposed. That road is less windy but just as pedestrian traveled. It is also close to our downtown, and helps tie the town together. A sidewalk on the east side of town is also proposed, I know less about how well traveled that road is. but I know at least the end closer to McCarricks is busier.
Sidewalks have been added in a few areas in rocky point already, which look very nice to me. I think we need to assess each situation individualy and not protest to halt all additional sidewalks copletely. Hallock to magnolia and broadway to Narcissus are in desperate need of sidewalks. Lets start discussing those two roads first. This isn't a package deal.
Storm water runoff has closed our beach several times last year.
The state has moved the due date of its mandated storm water runoff fix several times. Consequently to date, we haven't heard much in our area about mitigating that runoff into the sound. Much of the runoff occurs at hallock, broadway and friendship beaches.
With that in mind, now is the time to decide how much of those roads will need sidewalks since coupling those infrastructural improvements will be an effective strategy. Hallock Landing is a good place to start thinking about for many reasons, but mostly because it should be least arguable (in my opinion)
